How full are government hospital beds in Malaysia?
The Ministry of Health Malaysia (MoH) (link) has a dedicated dashboard that publishes data on hospital bed utilization in Malaysia. As of now, the latest update is from September 2024. This analysis focuses on two things:
Methodology
The government hospital utilization dataset is readily available and can be used directly
In order to calculate the number of government hospital beds per capita (per 1,000 people), population data is required.
Population data by state was sourced from the Department of Statistics Malaysia (DOSM) (link).
The number of government hospital beds was also obtained from the Ministry of Health Malaysia (MoH) dashboard (link). To ensure standardized comparisons across states, the number of government hospital beds was divided by the state population and multiplied by 1,000

Government Hospital Beds Utilization

Perlis has the highest bed utilization (83.1%), meaning hospitals there are operating at a very high capacity.
Other states like Melaka (80.2%) and Kedah (78.9%) are also experiencing high demand.
Short note: W.P. Labuan previously had 69.6% bed utilization (Aug 5, 2024) but now reports 0% as of September 2024.
