Drug Cases per 100k Citizens, by state
The National Anti-Drugs Agency (AADK) (link) has released a report detailing drug case statistics from 2018 to September 2024. This project presents the findings through graphs and tables for easier interpretation and analysis.
Methodology
Population data by state was sourced from the Department of Statistics Malaysia (DOSM) (link). The number of drug cases was obtained from the National Anti-Drugs Agency (AADK) (link). To standardize comparisons across states, the number of drug cases was divided by the state population and multiplied by 100,000 to calculate drug cases per 100K residents.
Note: This analysis only includes Malaysians because AADK’s dataset does not cover non-citizens.
Analysis
State-Level Trends
Kelantan Leads in 2024
- Kelantan recorded the highest drug cases per 100K Malaysians in 2024 at 1,005, a 31% increase from 2023 (765 → 1,005).
East Coast States Have Consistently High Rates
Terengganu and Pahang also show persistently high drug cases
Pahang had the highest rate in 2018 at 1,021, but it has since declined to 750 in 2024.
Perlis, Kedah & Pulau Pinang
Perlis jumped from 751 (2022) to 989 (2023) and remains high at 922 in 2024.
Kedah saw a steady increase, reaching 832 in 2024 from 568 in 2018.
Pulau Pinang has seen a sharp increase since 2020. From 477 cases per 100K in 2021, to 778 in 2024.
Selangor, Sabah, and Sarawak Have the Lowest Rates
- Selangor (322), Sarawak (389) and Sabah (277) consistently report lower drug cases per 100K than other states.
- Sabah has one of the most stable trends, with values consistently under 400 from 2018 to 2024.
Regional Trends
East Coast Remains the Most Affected
- The East Coast region (Kelantan, Terengganu, Pahang) recorded 905 drug cases per 100K citizens in 2024.
Northern Region Also Shows High Numbers
- The Northern region (Perlis, Kedah, Pulau Pinang, Perak) is the second highest in 2024
Central & East Malaysia Remain Relatively Low
